Duolingo French Podcast - Episode 50: Le grand pari (The Big Gamble)

In June 2007, 23-year-old Loïc Jégou hit rock bottom. He’d once dreamed of becoming one of France’s best soccer players, but an injury had left him out of the game…and in debt. For money, he turned to odd jobs, des petits boulots, and worked part time for McDonald’s, or as French people say, “McDo.” Still, he felt stuck. Je voulais une carrière brillante. Mais à 18 ans, j'avais déjà perdu mon rêve. Je ne pouvais plus payer mon loyer, alors je suis allé vivre chez mes grands-parents. That year, the game of poker, le poker, became all the rage in France. One night, a friend invited Loïc to a poker tournament at a fancy gambling club, un club de jeux, on Paris’s most famous avenue, les Champs-Élysées. So Loïc put on his nicest jeans and he left la banlieue, the suburbs of Paris he called home, and he headed off to try his luck at cards. Le club de jeux se trouvait dans un immeuble de luxe, avec des plafonds très hauts et bien éclairés. Les gens étaient très bien habillés. As Loïc and more and more people were let in, it became obvious that the organizers hadn’t hired enough card dealers, or in casino-lingo, croupiers. But the director of the tournament noticed right away Loïc was good with the cards. He approached him and asked a question that would change the course of Loïc’s life: Could Loïc be a croupier for the rest of the night? That night on les Champs-Élysées, he’d only come to play a few hands for fun. But then, for the first time in his life, he found himself on the other side of a poker table, dealing the cards. Être croupier, ce n'était pas facile ! J’étais très bon avec les cartes, mais j'étais aussi très nerveux. Alors, mes mains étaient humides et les cartes glissaient entre mes doigts. Les gens voyaient que j'étais nouveau, mais j’essayais de bien faire ce travail. Loïc tried to relax and do the basic work of a croupier. He dealt cards, counted the chips, les jetons, and chatted with people at the table. J'ai fait le travail de croupier pendant une heure et demie, mais à cause du stress, j’ai eu l’impression que ça avait duré une éternité. Finalement, j’avais réussi à suivre le jeu et à distribuer les jetons. Et je m’étais bien entendu avec les joueurs ! J’avais bien fait mon travail, et j’étais fier de moi. For the first time since his accident on the soccer field, Loïc had found something he was good at. He’d forgotten what it was like to excel at something. Being a croupier for a night, he felt a little bit more like himself. À la fin de la soirée, le directeur est venu me voir. Il m'a proposé de travailler pour lui comme croupier de façon permanente. Je n’avais jamais pensé que je pourrais gagner ma vie comme ça. Je lui ai répondu que j'allais y réfléchir. Loïc went back to his home outside of Paris. He did a bit of research. At the time, with all his part-time jobs, he was earning minimum wage, roughly 1,200 euros a month. But he found out that a beginner croupier could earn as much as 3,000 euros a month. Loïc decided he would give it a try, so he called the director of the poker tournament. Plus je réfléchissais et plus je me disais que ce métier était fait pour moi. Pour être croupier, il fallait trois qualités : être agile de ses mains, être sociable et être bon en maths. Je possédais ces trois qualités, alors j'ai contacté le directeur et je lui ai dit : « Je suis d’accord pour essayer. » Il était content parce qu’il avait besoin de croupiers. This kind of job could offer Loïc a real career path and the opportunity to travel. There were teams of croupiers that got to deal in big poker tournaments at select casinos in popular vacation destinations throughout France. And then there were the really big tournaments in Europe’s biggest cities. Les meilleurs croupiers font tous partie d’une équipe qui travaille pour les organisateurs de compétitions et les casinos. Loic was told that in order to start working as a croupier, he had to do a special training, une formation, and then pass an aptitude test on calculation, dexterity, and general casino knowledge. La formation durait six semaines. J’allais apprendre les règles et le fonctionnement d’un casino. Mais surtout, j’allais apprendre comment distribuer les cartes et à compter les jetons au poker. C’était une formation très spécifique, alors à Paris, il n’y avait qu’une seule école pour ça… Et cette formation coûtait 1 500 euros ! Loïc did not have the money to pay for croupier school. And without the training, he could not get the job. He had finally found something that he was good at, and that offered him a chance to see the world. But now, he was stuck again. For four months he tried to save enough money, but it seemed impossible. So in November 2007, he decided to take a gamble. Alors, un jour, je suis allé à l'école des croupiers et j’ai demandé à parler avec le directeur. Je lui ai dit : « Croupier, c’est ma vocation. Mais je n'ai pas d’argent pour payer la formation… Laissez-moi faire la formation gratuitement, et c’est promis, je vous rembourserai avec mon premier salaire de croupier. » The director said no. He did not want to front the money, even if Loic was promising to reimburse him. So Loïc thanked him politely for his time and headed home. But just before he got back to his grandparents’ house, he got a call from the school director. Le directeur de l’école m’a dit : « Je veux te faire confiance. » Il a décidé de m’aider et de me laisser payer plus tard. Pendant notre rencontre, j’avais été très poli avec lui. Donc je pense qu’il a senti que j’étais sincère et que je voulais vraiment faire ce métier. J’étais tellement content ! Je lui ai dit : « Vous ne regretterez pas votre décision. » Puis, j'ai commencé l'école tout de suite. Loïc worked hard to learn everything about poker. He learned to shuffle and deal the cards and he learned poker’s history and traditions. There were many types of games, each had a special way of counting a winning hand. And they all had unique names, like le courchevel, named after a town in the French Alps, or le poker fermé, stud poker. J’ai appris toutes les variantes de poker. Il y en a des dizaines, comme le courchevel ou le poker fermé. À l’école, ma formatrice était impressionnée parce que je calculais très rapidement. À la fin de la formation, j’ai eu les meilleurs résultats de tout le groupe. Le jour après l’examen final, j’avais déjà trouvé un travail. Loïc found the night schedules grueling, but over time, he adjusted. At the end of his first month on the job, he’d been so in demand as a croupier, he’d earned 4,000 euros. And of course, as soon as he got his paycheck, Loïc went back to the school and paid the school director back. He felt confident he had chosen the right path. J’avais l’impression d’être le roi du monde. Je gagnais bien ma vie et je rencontrais des gens intéressants. Je travaillais la nuit à Paris, alors je voyais des joueurs qui venaient de partout dans le monde. C’était comme si je voyageais en restant à Paris. C’était fascinant. Within four months, Loïc had become one of the best croupiers at the club de jeux where he was working. But after two years, he felt he was outgrowing Paris, and wanted to see more of the world. Loïc began eyeing the Mecca of casinos, where only the best croupiers in the world were invited: the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco. Quand j’étais plus jeune, je voyais le casino de Monaco dans les films de James Bond. C’était toujours un paysage magnifique, au bord de la mer Méditerranée. Je me demandais comment c'était de vivre là-bas. Becoming a croupier in Monaco wasn’t like applying to a job. To work there, you had to join an international team of croupiers. Loic knew those team members were recruited only at the best events, like the EPT, the European Poker Tour, a series of tournaments, des tournois, that take place in some of Europe’s finest casinos. Je voulais vraiment faire partie d’une équipe d'élite qui allait à Monaco. Mais il ne suffit pas d’amener son CV là-bas. Ça ne marche pas comme ça. Il faut avoir de l'expérience, faire des tournois, et prouver qu’on est bon. Alors, j'ai commencé à parler avec les organisateurs des European Poker Tours pour travailler avec eux. In 2010, Loïc was recruited to deal at the European Poker Tour organized in Deauville, a fancy seaside town on the Atlantic Ocean. This was a big deal. Deauville has one of the most renowned casinos in France. Loïc would be traveling there to deal cards for people who paid 5,000 euros just to get a seat at the table. C'était très différent de Paris ! Le casino de Deauville était à côté de la plage. Je me souviens qu’on pouvait même sentir l’odeur de la mer. Mais il y avait tellement de gens dans le tournoi et tellement de bruit qu'on n'entendait pas le bruit des vagues de la mer. Getting to work at an EPT tournament in Deauville’s casino was a major opportunity. Loïc hoped to do well there and be noticed by a talent scout, un découvreur de talents, who ran a team that traveled to casinos all over the world, including Monaco. Je suis arrivé à Deauville avec une seule idée en tête : montrer à ce découvreur de talents que je devais être dans son équipe. Je savais que j’étais un excellent croupier et que je pouvais être parmi les meilleurs. Je voulais découvrir le monde, et aller à Monaco. The tournament lasted ten days. Every day in Deauville, Loïc wore a pristine white shirt, with a black vest and a black tie, and he put on his best smile while dealing cards and entertaining the patrons. But he also scanned the room for people watching him. He tried to see if he could spot, repérer, the talent scout. Je voyais le découvreur de talents surveiller toutes les tables. J’étais nerveux, parce que je me sentais observé… If the talent scout didn’t notice him, Loïc wouldn’t make it to Monaco. Mais je savais que moi aussi, j’avais du talent. J'avais travaillé très dur pour être sélectionné et aller à Monaco. C’était ma chance ! Je voulais vraiment y arriver. The nights wore on at the EPT Poker tournament in Deauville. First, there were 100 tables, with about 120 croupiers and 1,000 players. By day nine, only three tables were left, and on the last day, one table remained. Only the best players would sit at the last table. And only the best croupiers would deal. Loïc checked the list of names to find out which croupiers had been chosen. Sur la liste, il y avait seulement trois noms. Quand j’ai vu mon nom, j'étais fier, et très content ! Loïc knew that being asked to deal at the last table meant that he had been seen by the talent scouts! He hoped it also meant that he’d be chosen to join the best croupiers in the world to travel the world’s most famous casinos from Deauville to Monaco. Le soir de la finale, le gagnant est parti avec 900 000 euros. Après le tournoi, le découvreur de talents est venu me parler et m’a offert un poste dans l’équipe de mes rêves. Cette équipe était considérée comme la meilleure du monde. Many croupiers work for a decade before making it to Monaco. But it took Loïc less than five years. In 2013, after having toured the world with his dream team for a year and a half, Loïc was finally bound for Monaco. He’d been asked to go there to work a ten-day tournament. Je n’avais jamais été aussi près de mon rêve. J’étais très heureux, mais j’avais peur aussi, parce que je savais que j’allais travailler avec des professionnels très connus. La crème de la crème. If he did well, Loïc’s contract could be renewed for another tournament. But he knew the competition was fierce. There were 100 croupiers in the team, some as young as 20 years old and some with decades of experience. They came from all over the world. Parmi l’équipe de croupiers, il y avait des Américains, des Italiens, des Polonais, des Autrichiens… C’était comme une grande famille. Au total, dans l’équipe, on parlait 55 langues différentes. Mais moi, je ne parlais que le français… Monaco is on the French Riviera, between Nice and the Italian Border. It is most famous for its Casino, its formula 1 Grand Prix car races, and its Royalty. But Monaco is not a kingdom. It is a principality, a state run by a prince. Je n'étais jamais allé à Monaco. J'avais seulement vu la ville dans des films et sur des photos. Les autres croupiers me parlaient souvent du luxe et des casinos magnifiques de Monaco. C’est un univers très luxueux. Il y a même une famille royale, avec un Prince de Monaco : le Prince Albert II. Mais il n’y a pas de roi parce que Monaco est une principauté. La principauté de Monaco is 2.1 square kilometers, roughly 20 blocks by 20. The official language is French, but English is widely spoken as there are tourists from all over. Within that tiny place, Loïc found more wealth than he ever imagined. Je m’attendais à voir du luxe mais ce que je voyais était inimaginable. Les voitures, c'est vraiment ce qui m'a le plus choqué. Chaque fois que je tournais la tête, je voyais une Ferrari. Loïc didn’t need a Ferrari to enjoy Monaco. He rented a red scooter and he slalomed with it down the narrow winding streets of Monaco discovering his new turf. Dès mon arrivée, j’ai aimé être à Monaco. J’aimais la chaleur, et la ville était toujours ensoleillée. Je n’avais pas beaucoup de temps libre. Je travaillais 14 heures par jour, mais quand je pouvais, j'allais à la plage. Et puis surtout, j'aimais prendre mon scooter pour aller travailler en observant la mer Méditerranée. J’avais vraiment de la chance d‘être dans un endroit aussi spécial. But in Monaco, Loic had to make sure he measured up. À Monaco, dès le premier jour, j'ai compris qu'il n'y avait que des bons croupiers dans l’équipe. Certains étaient meilleurs que moi. J'étais très impressionné. Je me sentais tout petit. Loïc wanted to be among the top croupiers in Monaco. He constantly practiced how to shuffle and deal the cards… He wanted to make them dance in his hands But another thing stood in his way: a lot of the players spoke English, and Loïc could only speak French. J’étais nul à l’école donc je n’ai jamais appris une autre langue. Je savais que c'était un handicap pour ma carrière. Alors pour apprendre, j’ai commencé à parler à mes collègues en anglais. Loïc practiced his English every chance he got. He knew he was not good yet, but he spoke to people anyways. By the end of the ten-day tournament, he felt that his hard work with the words and the cards finally paid off. Je ne suis pas devenu Shakespeare, mais je pouvais plaisanter avec les clients internationaux… Et je faisais danser les cartes entre mes mains. At the end of the tournament, he was again selected to work some of the final games… À la fin du tournoi à Monaco, j’avais encore une fois été choisi pour être croupier sur la dernière table du tournoi. J’avais 28 ans. J’étais croupier depuis seulement cinq ans et je faisais déjà partie des meilleurs. One month after the Monaco tournament, Loïc got the happy news that his contract would be renewed for a new tournament in Barcelona. The contract renewal meant that next year, he’d be invited to Monaco again! And in the meantime, he’d get to travel the world, doing what he loved. He felt he had finally found success, la réussite. Quand je rentrais dans les casinos de Monaco, je me sentais comme chez moi. Je connaissais tout le monde, et tout le monde me connaissait. Les débutants dans le métier venaient me demander des conseils. Pour moi, c’est ça la réussite, l’excellence. Loïc Jégou is an internationally-known croupier.
