In the basement of the Rio Bank, north of Buenos Aires, Officer M. couldn't believe his eyes. Just as he and the special forces team had discovered a large hole behind one of the bank's filing cabinets. "¡Un momento! ¡Todavía no podemos entrar!". His flashlight landed on what looked to be a grenade, just inside the hole. Llamamos a la unidad de explosivos de inmediato. Hicieron pruebas y determinaron que la granada era falsa. The grenade was fake…a decoy. Yet another distraction that had bought the thieves more time. Police had a hunch that the hole in the wall led to the sewer, or alcantarilla, down below the bank. And now, Episode 2: The Hunt, or La caza. While Officer M. and his team searched for clues in the sewers below the bank, Journalists Rodolfo Palacios and María Ripetta were busy reporting on the story up above them, on the streets of Acassuso. As more details got out in the news, Argentines across the country became fascinated with the story of the Río bank heist. Everyone was glued to their TVs, hungry for more information. The customers of the bank, mostly upper-middle-class residents of Buenos Aires, were still trying to figure out if they had lost their life savings. It was a Friday, a full week after the robbery had taken place, and Rodolfo and María were on a tight deadline to submit stories by the time their newspaper ran on Sunday. They were desperate to find a new angle on the crime — something other news outlets weren't reporting. And then, just their luck, their sources in the police force went completely silent. The truth was that the police had no new leads, not the night before and not that morning either. María and Rodolfo began to walk the area. They couldn't go back to their editor empty-handed. Acassuso is home to some of Buenos Aires's wealthiest residents — including prominent politicians. All of this only increased pressure on police to solve the case. Here's Rodolfo Palacios. Some neighbors told María and Rodolfo that they were terrified. This type of robbery was not common in such a low crime area. When María Ripetta heard about the storm drain theory, she and a photographer visited the river to check the drain pipe where the thieves had supposedly escaped. But the drain pipe theory was immediately discarded when Officer M. discovered a ladder. Finally an eyewitness told the police about the mysterious crew that had been working around that same hole a few days before. The witness, a domestic worker, worked in a house 50 meters away from the utility hole. The fake weapons, the confusing hostage releases, even the pizza order the thieves had placed shortly before disappearing: it was becoming clear these things had all been planned specifically to lead police astray. The police were now being ridiculed by the press for letting the thieves get away, so Officer M. was careful to keep some details of the investigation as quiet as possible. Teníamos que ser muy prudentes con los periodistas porque sabíamos que el caso era de gran interés público. María and Rodolfo took some time to prepare for their next Sunday deadline, doing research, and interviewing witnesses. But they didn't turn up anything new. The thieves were unknown to Officer M. as well. For him, the search had become a true obsession. She had always had reliable sources on the force. So during those early days, she would take some agents out for lunch, hoping they'd give her tips about the case that would give her an edge over other news outlets. The agent told María that the police had found a note written in black letters and taped to a wall. The agent told her: "Write down what I'm going to say because I'm not going to repeat it." The thieves had written a short note that literally translates to: "In a neighborhood of rich people, without weapons or grudges, there's just money, no love." The officer's disclosure was a major scoop for María. It offered the biggest hint so far into the motive behind the heist. Era un mensaje intrigante. To her, the message took on extra meaning because of the economic crisis that had struck Argentina a few years before, what they called el Corralito. During the crisis, the country's banks froze everyone's assets, to ensure that Argentines, and more importantly, their money, stayed inside the country during the worst of the crisis. Many people were still scarred from that period, when they couldn't even access their own savings. Some people lost everything. El Corralito afectó a las clases altas y medias que perdieron sus ahorros con la devaluación y la congelación de cuentas. En ese banco, muchas personas de clase media y media alta guardaban sus joyas y dinero en cajas de seguridad, donde teóricamente estaban a salvo. Los ladrones prácticamente se estaban riendo de los ricos. María's colleague, Rodolfo, was shocked that the police had actually revealed the existence of this note. ¡Ni nosotros ni nuestro editor lo podíamos creer! Rodolfo did some research and found some startling similarities with another robbery, back in 1976, in the French city of Nice. Those robbers had also broken into safe deposit boxes, and left a message written on the wall that said: "Without weapons, hatred or violence." Their headline was: "Secret message left by the gang," (El mensaje secreto que dejó la banda). It was a huge development because it pointed towards a more significant motive than just robbing a bank. The reporters thought that the thieves were making a statement against greed and wealth. Fue mi primera gran primicia y me dio mucha satisfacción. Además, era importante porque no había nueva información sobre el robo por ninguna parte. Once news of the note came out, the police were unable to deny the story. Como si fueran Robin Hood. Given the fallout from the infamous Corralito, it wasn't surprising that people were beginning to glorify the thieves as heroes. In the heat of the crisis, masses of furious and bankrupt protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires in a revolt against the government that left at least 22 dead and scores of protesters injured in cities around the nation. This was all fresh in people's minds, so many people were still angry with the banks. But Officer M. didn't think their support of the robbers was fair. During the second week of the investigation, the police got what looked like a lead in the case. It had to do with that strange phone call the robbers made to the TV channel during the heist — when they requested an interview from inside the bank. The police traced the cell towers in the area to determine where the call had been made. Trabajábamos con el mejor experto de teléfonos celulares en toda Argentina. With so many loose ends and no reliable leads, the prosecution decided to set up a hotline for tips. Dozens of people called in claiming to know who the thieves were. Predictably…most of those leads, or pistas, would end up being fake. Here's Prosecutor Apolo, we reached him by phone: Fue una investigación muy minuciosa y un trabajo muy intenso. They didn't rule out absolutely anything. One morning, the phone rang at the San Isidro district attorney's office insistently. An agitated woman said she wanted to speak to the prosecutor, urgently. To recap — the police have finally put together that the robbers vanished with the loot through an underground tunnel. And the reporters have learned that the thieves left a mysterious note that talked about robbing the rich without violence.
